Governor urges EPA to declare old mill site a Superfund

Federal regulators say a trucking company will pay penalties of $83,500 to settle pollution violations stemming from a fuel tanker crash that spilled 63,000 gallons of gasoline near Flathead Lake.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said Tuesday's penalty announcement resolves its enforcement action against Keller Transportation, Inc. over the 2008 spill near Polson.
The accident was blamed on excessive speed after the driver lost control around a curve along on Montana Highway 35. The spilled gasoline contaminated springs around Flathead Lake and led to the evacuation of five homes for nearly a year.
The EPA says the area of contamination is decreasing. But the agency says high levels of contamination persist in the main path of the spill and a water treatment system will remain in place indefinitely.
