Flathead race brings out runners' inner Spartan
BIGFORK, Mont. -

Runners weren't afraid to get dirty at the Montana Spartan Race south of Bigfork on Saturday. Almost five miles and 25 obstacles couldn't stop runners from flocking to the starting line. Thousands of participants pushed through the grueling course which featured barbed wire, fire, mud, and spear throwing.

"Spartans" caught up with NBC Montana and told us it was a race that couldn't have been completed without camaraderie and spirit.

"It was awesome, everyone was cheering each other on, helping each other over fences," said Kaci Yachechak.

"There was some true altruism out there. I had this one woman hold branches back for me," explained Gabe Murphy. "It was like everyone was out there not just for themselves. They were helping people out."

The Spartan Race is Montana's first extreme obstacle course race.
