Former sheriff's sergeant stripped of certificates

KALISPELL, Mont. -

A former Lake County sheriff's sergeant who officials say fabricated a military war record has been stripped of his law certifications and had his name entered in a national database that will likely dissuade other law agencies from hiring him.

The Flathead Beacon reports the Montana Public Safety Officer Standards and Training Council last week voted unanimously to permanently revoke Dan Duryee's certificates.

Officials say Duryee lied both on and off duty about serving in the Marine Corps in the first Gulf War, killing enemy combatants, losing comrades and friends, receiving a napalm wound and scar on his arm, and suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome.

Duryee says he never served in the military and falsely claimed he did, but denies making many other statements attributed to him.

He resigned earlier this year during the investigation.
