FWP kills 5 black bears along Smith River

GREAT FALLS, Mont. -

State and federal wildlife officials have killed five food-conditioned black bears along the Smith River.

Montana State Parks officials closed the Smith River State Park between Camp Baker and Eden Bridge last Saturday because black bears had been getting into campers' food at several boat camps.

The bear activity caused the closure of numerous camping areas, making it difficult to provide adequate and safe camping opportunities for those floating the central Montana river.

The Great Falls Tribune reports officials with the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks and USDA Wildlife Services dispatched the bears.

Parks spokeswoman Jennifer Lawson said Tuesday that the river and park will remain closed until further notice because officials are still monitoring camps to make sure other bears are not involved.
