Helena man pleads guilty in bicycle fatal
A Helena man has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while under the influence for striking and killing a man riding a bicycle.
Joel Brett Powers entered his plea Thursday for the Sept. 25 death of 29-year-old Benjamin John Homan. Homan was riding his bike home on a rainy night when he was struck.
Powers entered his plea less than two weeks before he was scheduled to go to trial. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors agreed to drop charges of aggravated DUI and failure to remain at the scene of the accident.
Powers remains free on a $50,000 bond. District Judge Jeffrey Sherlock scheduled Powers' sentencing for April 7.
