BILLINGS, Mont. -

More than 700 women attended a personal safety and self-defense course put on by the Billings Police Department and Montana State University Billings Police Department.

Billings Police Chief Rich St. John tells the Billings Gazette (http://bit.ly/1dK9rYi) that the event on Thursday was in response to a series of home invasions and sexual assaults since the beginning of the year.

Officers Shane Weinreis, Bethany Schwartz and Samantha Puckett demonstrated basic self-defense techniques designed to ward of larger, stronger attackers.

Cindy Kern attended the event with her teenage daughter and says she hoped her daughter could learn some techniques to give her a fighting chance.

Officials also spoke of ways to make a home safer from invasion. Some of those suggestions included getting a dog and identifying areas where illegal entry could be made.
