KALISPELL, Mont. -

Police searching a snowbank with a metal detector recovered a Purple Heart medal that was stolen from the brother of a now-deceased Vietnam War veteran in Kalispell.

When officers arrested 25-year-old Sean David Smith for the Jan. 9 theft of a shadow box containing the military uniform they recovered some of the medals. Associates of Smith turned some others in, but police learned some of the medals belonging to U.S. Army Capt. James Smith might be in garbage bins in the Kalispell area.

Officer Brett Corbett told The Daily Inter Lake on Wednesday that investigators believed the final missing medal, a Bronze Star, would be recovered later Wednesday. Police don't think they will recover the uniform.

Greg Smith, who framed his brother's uniform, said officers had already found more than he ever thought they would.
