Leader of tribal leaders council dies at 68
Gordon Belcourt, executive director of the Montana-Wyoming Tribal Leaders Council, has died.
Belcourt's family said he died of natural causes Monday at St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings. He was 68.
Annie Belcourt tells The Billings Gazette her father lived a generous, thoughtful and compassionate life and worked for the health and wellness of Native Americans.
Belcourt built the tribal leaders council and has been its executive director since 1998, working, in part, to prevent suicide and curb alcohol abuse among Indians.
Belcourt grew up on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, graduated from Browning High School and earned a master's degree in public health from the University of California at Berkeley. He attended law suit at the University of Montana and once served as president of the Blackfeet Community College.
