BOZEMAN, Mont. -

"I've never seen somebody motivated to save lives," said Gateway Fire Department fire fighter Lisa Ellison, about Assistant Chief Kevin Lauer.

Anyone who knows Lauer knows he's a dedicated volunteer.

In addition to working long days as a supervisor for American Medical Response (AMR), he donates time at Gateway Fire Department and serves as one of the main men behind Gallatin Heart Rescue.

"Take your hand, place it right over the chest," Lauer said, positioning his hands over the chest of an inflatable mannequin. The organization teaches people how to do CPR.

"I really admire his dedication to the program, and the success that he's accomplished," said AMR EMT Thaddeus Josephson.

Since Lauer co-founded Gallatin Heart Rescue last year, more than 7,000 people have learned CPR. And since starting the program, his classes have grown from Bozeman to all around the state. Other states have even picked up the program, too.

"He really puts so much time and effort into his volunteer work... making the community a better place to be," Josephson said.

Those around him said they admire Lauer's commitment to the community. But it's also how he is that they said make him a Local Hero.

"His attitude, enthusiasm that never waivers," said Ellison, who nominated Lauer for the award. "He motivates all of us."

Lauer said since starting the program, he's heard stories of class participants going on to save someone's life through CPR. And that's what makes the work so rewarding for him.

"The impact that we've had on so many people, and the impact that we're going to have on a lot more people is really heart warming," Lauer said, adding "That's our goal. We want to save lives."
