A Lolo resident got an unwelcome surprise when she found out somebody else cashed her tax refund.
Ronda McDermott grew suspicious when her income tax refund check was taking longer than expected. She had hoped her check would arrive at her post office box in Lolo within a month or so of filing her taxes. But when that didn't happen she started looking for answers.
After two hours on the phone with the IRS McDermott said she was told to wait four to six weeks and check back. Then about a week later she got confirmation that her check had been sent and cashed in Memphis, Tennessee.
“I thought 'Oh my gosh, I’ve been scammed,'” said McDermott.
She received a picture of the check. The person who cashed it in Memphis didn’t even spell McDermott’s last name correctly when they signed it. But the money was gone.
“I contemplated having direct deposit or through the mail and I thought P.O. box should be pretty safe, obviously not.”
McDermott said she believes the check was intercepted by someone at the IRS or the post office since those are likely the only people who had their hands on it.
She’s still waiting to hear what’s next. At this point she doesn’t know when or if she’ll get a reissued check.
The investigation’s been turned over to the FBI.
