Detective Sgt. T.J. McDermott has been elected as Missoula County sheriff.
McDermott won the race with about 52 percent of the votes, coming out ahead of Josh Clark and Robert Parcell. All three ran as Democrats.
No one ran for sheriff on the Republican ticket, so the Democratic primary winner takes the sheriff seat.
McDermott had the support of the Missoula County Democrats as well as Mayor John Engen and Missoula County Commissioner Jean Curtiss.
"I'm confident that with the team of professionals and the men and women that we have at the sheriff's office, and at the detention center, that we can sit down, work together and get back to what we do best, serving the public," McDermott said.
He began his career in law enforcement in 1995 with the Anaconda Police Department. In 2003 he joined the Missoula County Sheriff's Office.
