BOZEMAN, Mont. -

The Montana Department of Transportation announced it will temporarily close Beartooth Pass at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.

According to the agency's Facebook Page US-212, the Beartooth Pass, will be closed on both the Montana and Wyoming sides because of a storm system that is expected to impact the higher elevations.

Yellowstone National Park says the road will be closed at Long Lake Gate on the Wyoming side and at the gate 13 miles south of Red Lodge on the Montana side.

The Beartooth Pass includes a number of tight switch backs and reaches an elevation of nearly 11,000 feet.  Meteorologists are predicting several inches of snow on mountain passes.  The snow could create severe driving conditions.

MDT says once the snow has moved through the area workers will evaluate conditions over the pass and reopen it once it has been determined safe to drive.

Travelers needing to get to Cooke City can use the Highway 296, the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway.

Officials briefly closed Beartooth Pass last week after another storm left snow in the higher elevations.
