MISSOULA, Mont. -

EPA officials announced on Wednesday the completion of a mine waste cleanup project in Superior, west of Missoula.

Crews started the work at the beginning of September digging up and removing dangerous contaminates like lead and arsenic from the yards and driveways of almost 40 homes.

Project manager Kristine Edwards tells it was completed on schedule - no easy task considering most of work was done during the sequestration and government shutdown.

"The next thing is to make sure the remedy that we've implemented is stable,” said Edwards. “We went in and removed parts of people's yards and we re-vegetated those areas. We'll go back next year and make sure that the vegetation is surviving."

Edwards said the work cost about $1.5 million.
