Missoula airport fights Saturday fog with fog seeding

Many Western Montanans dealt with thick fog on Saturday. It was enough to prompt staff at Missoula International Airport to use their fog seeding system to help prevent delays.

Fog seeding involves putting carbon dioxide into the air. It cools the moisture, which basically turns into ice or small snowflakes and falls out of the sky.

“We started this morning doing it. If the conditions are right, usually we can have some effect in 15 or 20 minutes, but a lot of times we’ll have to continue to do it just to kind of keep things opened up,” said Airport Director Cris Jensen.

Jensen tells NBC Montana that on average, the airport uses fog seeding about five days out of a winter.
