MISSOULA, Mont. -

A suicide shut down a major intersection in Missoula Tuesday morning.

The report came in first as a car wreck around 11 a.m. at the intersection of Mullan and Reserve. Then a witness reported the woman in the car had a gun in her hand.

The car doors were locked. Missoula Police told us they had to force their way inside to get to the victim. Officials say the woman shot herself.

"The officers breached the door, made entry into the car and made it possible for EMS to render aid," said Missoula Police Public Information Officer Travis Welsh. "Unfortunately, the woman is now deceased and it does appear it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

The woman's name is not being released until family members are notified.

Drivers and pedestrians were asked to avoid the busy intersection while investigators worked at the scene. It took emergency crews a little over an hour to get traffic flowing again.

The following information was released Tuesday night by the Missoula Police Department:

Investigation continues into the death of the woman who apparently committed suicide this morning near the intersection of Mullan Rd. and Reserve St. A witness at the scene stated the woman shot herself shortly after being involved in a traffic accident. A large caliber handgun was recovered, and the victim was found to have what appears to be a single gunshot wound to the head. The victim was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
At this time MPD Investigators have not determined that any other persons were involved in the death, however interviews continue with witnesses, and the other person involved in the vehicle accident that preceded the apparent suicide.
