Missoula-based smokejumpers stay busy
As fire season continues to flare up around the Western United States, Missoula-based smokejumpers are staying busy. They’re working fires like the West Mullan Fire in Superior, and they’ve been heading out to new starts in Idaho too.
NBC Montana stopped by the Smokejumper base on Saturday to catch the action as crews prepare to take off for fires in the Nez Perce- Clearwater National Forests. On Saturday, 8 more smokejumpers headed out there, joining the roughly ten Missoula-based jumpers working the blazes already.
“We’re a national resource, [so] we’re ready and willing to where we’re needed. Montana’s our priority, but if things are a little quiet here, we’re on the road,” said Missoula Smokejumper Assistant Operation Foreman Dan Cottrell.
