City of Missoula will weigh in on regulations for new homeless shelters, meal centers
MISSOULA, Mont. -

Next week, Missoulians can weigh in on regulations for new homeless shelters and meal centers in city limits.

They used to be called soup kitchens.

The city wants input on a proposed zoning ordinance restricting such facilities to commercial areas.

It all stems from a plan to remodel the old Sweetheart Bread building to serve the poor.

Some residents were unhappy with its location next to residential areas and to a school.

The proposed regulation requires more public oversight.

"The requires review by the city council and the planning staff," said planner Tom Zavitz,"and then approval by the city council including a final vote."

On Tuesday, October 29, there's an open house on the proposed regulations at city council chambers.

That lasts from five till seven.

Public comment is encouraged.

On Wednesday, the council's land use committee will discuss all the comments and suggestions.

The planning board will consider the regs and any changes on November 9th.
