Montana agency delays paying for water project

GREAT FALLS, Mont. -

Montana officials say they won't pay for a project to pipe clean drinking water from Conrad to Brady until water-rights issues are resolved.

State Department of Natural Resources and Conservation Director John Tubbs tells the Great Falls Tribune that the project will likely be delayed at least a year.

He said Friday the project can't move forward until the Pondera County Canal and Reservoir Co. submits a "change of use" application.

The canal company owns the water rights to Conrad's municipal water source.

The Montana Department of Environmental Quality says the current supply of water to Brady's 250 residents exceeds federal standards for pesticides, herbicides, inorganic solids and chlorine added to decontaminate the water.
