Students look through racks of old costumes.

MISSOULA, Mont. -

The UM School of Theatre and Dance offered rock bottom prices to get rid of its old costumes. The problem is space. There isn't a large storage area for costumes in the performing arts center. Costume storage has been kicked around campus over the years. When they were briefly left with no temporary storage space earlier this year, there became a need to clean house.

Tuesday and Wednesday, racks of clothes filled the lobby of the performing arts center. Many items cost less than a dollar; some only 25 cents. While the aspiring thespians and dancers got the first pick of the excess costumes, they left most of the pickings to the public.

Costume shop supervisor Paula Niccum stated that many historic period costumes and those with expensive fabric went the quickest during the 2-day sale. She planned the sale for the Halloween season to drum up more business. It allows the school to raise more money by selling off the more unusual costumes for the spooky holiday.

The sale is now over, but if you missed out there is still a chance to get some of the unwanted items. About half of the leftover items will end up in donation stores in Missoula, while the rest will be donated to help start a new theater program in Eastern Montana.
