US Attorney Mike Cotter says the federal government’s allowing of Washington-state and Colorado recreational marijuana laws to move forward without lawsuits does not negate the Justice Department’s three-year crackdown on medical marijuana providers in Montana. On Thursday, the Justice Department had announced that Washington and Colorado will be allowed to move forward with legal recreational marijuana provided they regulate it enough to keep it out of the hands of children and organized crime.
The announcement comes just a few months after US Attorney Mike Cotter’s office completed a massive drug investigation that netted 33 convictions of marijuana providers. Cotter has said that the convictions were the result of providers not following state laws.
Meanwhile, some Montanans are left wondering if Montana will also move toward legalizing marijuana. One Huffington Post article lists Montana as one of the states likely to take the step.
