BOISE, Idaho -

Critics of education standards slated to begin in 2014 in schools in Idaho and numerous other states aim to derail the effort, possibly by convincing the coming Legislature to put the push on hold.

The Idaho Statesman (http://tinyurl.com/l396szj) reports foes of so-called "Common Core" requirements met in Boise Saturday where speakers bashed the standards as weak, not developed in Idaho and too focused on testing.

Common Core is supported by the National Governors Association and aims to align educational standards across America, from the more-fragmented existing system.

But Sandra Stotsky, a former Massachusetts education official who oversaw standards development in her state, questioned the rigor of the initiative in Idaho and beyond.

Meanwhile, state Rep. Lawerence Denney of Midvale says lawmakers approved Common Core in 2011 without understanding its implications.
