New legal challenge as spring bison hazing begins

HELENA, Mont. -

A wildlife organization is making a new legal challenge to block the use of a helicopter to haze bison back into Yellowstone National Park.

The annual hazing of bison that left the park over the winter in search of food began last week in southwestern Montana. The state Department of Livestock leads the drive from public and private land in the Gardiner Basin to make way for cattle to graze.

The Alliance for the Wild Rockies filed its request for an emergency injunction Monday with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The group says helicopter hazing displaces federally protected grizzly bears.

The alliance is asking the federal appeals court to block helicopter use pending its appeal of a ruling by U.S. District Judge Charles Lovell to allow the operation.
