Police are not releasing the name of a male in custody for a fatal shooting, but NBC Montana dug deeper and checked the jail roster and found that at 9:45 a.m. this morning, a 29-year-old male by the name of Markus Kaarma was taken into custody for deliberate homicide. Police have not confirmed the name.
The shooting happened in the quiet Grant Creek neighborhood. Missoula police officers responded to the 2600 block of Deer Canyon Court at 12:22 Sunday morning.
Officers encountered a male and female resident at the front of the house and a 17-year-old male, laying wounded in their garage.
Initial reports indicate that the male resident encountered an intruder in his garage. When the alarm went off, he shot him with a shotgun.
One Missoula neighbor saw the emergency response when he was on his way home at 12:30 in the morning.
“When we pulled up to our street, we saw a bunch of cop cars and we decided to just drive up and take a loop around the neighborhood just to see if it will clear up and when we came back down, we had a police officer pull us over and ask who we were and for our ID's," said Missoula resident, Mark Johnson.
Johnson didn't know what was happening at the time and when police told him, "I remember thinking, something like this just never happens on our street, barely in our neighborhood, so it's really just shocking,” said Johnson.
Several neighbors that NBC Montana talked with didn't want to go on camera but said that these kinds of things don't happen but that thefts have happened before.
"A couple of cars were burglarized here and some cell phones and stuff from a couple of people's cars. So that was just a week or two ago. As far as I know, the neighborhood is very safe," said Missoula resident, Jared Kuehn.
But Kuehn didn't hear about the shooting until NBC Montana told him.
"We moved into the neighborhood just assuming that it was a safe neighborhood; nice houses and a nice neighborhood. I had no idea it had happened and hearing about it was definitely kind of shocking,” said Kuehn.
Police are not yet identifying the 17-year-old victim.
Sergeant Travis Welsh emphasizes that it will be up to the county prosecutor to decide whether any charges are filed in this case and that the investigation is on-going.
