MISSOULA, Mont. -

The old Trails End Bar on West Broadway in Missoula is now rubble.

As crews haul it away, Missoula's homeless center, known as the Poverello Center, kicked off a public fundraising campaign to build its new center where the bar once was.

The Pov is asking for $500,000 from the Missoula-area community. It has already collected $1.1 million in private sector contributions.

The $5 million project won't differ greatly in size from the old Poverello on Ryman. But supporters said it makes better use of space, and will offer more services.

"We will have computers to help people with resume building," said Poverello Center director Eran Fowler Pehan. "GED preparation. We'll be teaching vocational skills in our soup kitchen for people who want to find employment in the hospitality industry."

Poverello client John Austin has health problems, and has dealt with chronic homelessness for a number of years.

"Once the new center is open," said Austin, "it will give me a chance to really sit down, think out my priorities."
