BUTTE, Mont. -

The state Board of Regents approved a new doctoral program in materials science at Montana Tech, with students also taking classes at Montana State and the University of Montana.
Tech Chancellor Don Blackketter said Thursday the school is happy to be adding its first doctoral program, which he believes will bring in research money and has the potential to improve the business climate in Butte.
The Montana Standard reports the program includes metallurgy, materials engineering, general engineering, chemistry and biology classes at Tech, mechanical engineering classes at MSU and physics and chemistry classes at UM.
Students will take some classes online or through interactive video.
Butte Local Development Corp. director John Smitham says he believes the new program will create new businesses in Butte based on research and work done by students.
