Rhode Island man drowns in Montana lake
Officials in Granite County say a Rhode Island man drowned after his canoe capsized on a southwestern Montana lake.
Sheriff Scott Dunkerson says that 44-year-old Julio A. Letran of Providence, R.I., died on Aug. 1 at Georgetown Lake, south of Philipsburg.
Witnesses called 911 just before 3 p.m. to report a man fell out of his canoe about 100 to 200 yards from shore. Dunkerson says two men jumped in the lake during a lightning storm and managed to get Letran into a boat, but by then he had been under water for about 20 minutes.
Efforts to resuscitate him failed.
Letran was visiting relatives at the time of the accident.
