Somers-Lakeside fails to pass school levy

Somers-Lakeside voters fail to pass levy
SOMERS, Mont. -

Voters turned down a $200,000 general fund levy for the Somers-Lakeside School District Tuesday evening. NBC Montana took a tour around Somers Middle School with Superintendent Paul Jenkins who tells us he's disheartened the levy failed.

Jenkins said times are tough, especially after losing around $36,000 in funding when the government slashed spending and the area got too big to qualify for rural money. The levy would have paid for upgrades in security and technology, and a few interior and exterior projects. Lakeside Elementary needs a new roof, and the middle school has an antiquated gym floor.

Jenkins says it's back to the drawing board to figure out a solution.

"As we continue to try and get our message out, call us. Stop by and ask us or come take a look at the schools and see what we're up against because there's a lot we are up against," said Jenkins. "There's just a lot to do and we don't have the money to do it right now."
