An undercover Missoula Police Detective, attached to the regional drug task force, was involved in a narcotics transaction in his vehicle when the suspect pulled a weapon on the officer in an apparent “drug rip.”  A gun battle ensued between the detective and the suspect wherein both the officer and suspect were shot.  The suspect attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended at the scene by backup officers.

The suspect was treated for a gunshot wound and was released from the hospital last night.  The 25 year-old male was booked into the Missoula County Detention Center and a 22 year old female suspect was also arrested in relation to this case. .

“This was a dynamic incident with a series of rapidly unfolding events,” said Bryan Lockerby, Administrator of the Division of Criminal Investigation. “There are a number of people who still need to be located and interviewed in order to determine the extent of involvement in this shooting. Our agents are working diligently to reconstruct the events leading up to this incident.”  Lockerby added there is no indication that a second armed suspect is still at large in the community.

The Montana Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation is commonly requested to assist in these kinds of cases in order to provide an independent investigation at the request of local agencies.  The local drug task force includes the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office, Missoula Police Department, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.  Once the investigation is complete, the report will be submitted to the Missoula County Attorney’s Office for review.
