Tester, Bullock tour Gallatin County storm damage
U.S. Sen. Jon Tester and Gov. Steve Bullock were stunned as they toured Gallatin County farmland damaged by a strong thunderstorm last week.
Tester, a farmer from Big Sandy, said Wednesday the damage from the Aug. 1 storm made him sick to his stomach, while Bullock called the tour "eye-opening and sickening."
County's Farm Service Agency executive director Billy Dennison gathered information Monday for county commissioners so they can ask Bullock to declare the county's agricultural land a disaster area. Dennison said most farmers saw 40 percent to 80 percent crop loss due to hail and winds that gusted up to 90 mph.
Bullock said there shouldn't be any question that a declaration is warranted.
Such a declaration could trigger federally subsidized loans for affected farmers.
