With the Olympics getting close and teams coming together, the community of Whitefish is waiting anxiously to hear if their very own Maggie Voisin made the U.S. Olympic freeskiing team.
It wasn't too long ago when Voisin spent every day at Whitefish Mountain Resort.
"She learned to really love the sport. And every weekend she was up here skiing and that's just what she did," said Steve Knox, Voisin’s old coach.
Voisin grew up on skis. The sport soon became more than just for fun, but a passion.
Voisin started her freeskiing career on Big Mountain in Whitefish at age 9 in 2008. After 4 years in the freeskiing program at Whitefish Mountain Resort, Voisin went on to bigger events. Her old coach remembers her determination.
"A competition she entered, and it was only one category for the women's. At 10-years-old she had to compete against 17-year-old women, and her dad went to the event's department and said 'What's up with this?' and they said they only have three or four in the category, so that's just the way it is. And she went on and of course got beat pretty bad but two years later she was beating those girls," said Knox.
Voisin celebrated many big wins last year, at both U.S. Revolution Tour and WSI/ASP World Championship in Whistler. People are impressed with how quickly she progressed.
"She's done really well and has excelled very quickly. Originally the Olympics wasn't even a thought because she was so young but then she did so well and she started accumulating points and the Olympics started becoming a possibility and now they're are a very real possibility," said Lisa Jones.
This is a possibility the community is enthused about.
"People are really excited for her and a lot of support out there from the community," said Jones.
It may seem that just the other day the 15-year-old put skis on for the first time and now she is tied for third place to qualify for the 2014 Olympic team in Sochi.
Even though Voisin's chances look good, the final decision is at the discretion of the U.S. Team coaches. The announcements for freeskiing will be some time Tuesday afternoon.
