Town Pump founder Tom Kenneally Sr. dies at 88
Town Pump Inc., founder Tom Kenneally Sr. has died in Butte. He was 88.
Duggan Dolan Mortuary says Kenneally died Friday of natural causes.
The Montana Standard reports Kenneally founded Town Pump with one gas station in Butte in 1953. The business has grown and now includes convenience stores, truck stops, casinos and motels and has about 3,000 employees.
Town Pump became the first company in Montana to introduce self-service gas pumps in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and Kenneally got permission to import gasoline from Canada during a national gas shortage in the 1970s. In the 1980s, Town Pump expanded to convenience stores and beginning in the 1990s opened truck stops, motels and casinos.
Kenneally is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann and seven children.
