U.S. Forest Service maps to be accessible on mobile devices

The U.S. Forest Service is working to make its revered maps, published on paper for decades, accessible on mobile devices.

The federal agency says the motor vehicle use maps, forest atlases, and visitor maps will soon be downloadable for free or for purchase and will be accessible on IOS and Android devices.

For people who still prefer paper, the Forest Service will still sell those too.

Tobey McGuirl, owner of Missoula’s Outdoor Supply and Rental, said the move is a welcome development for people who enjoy the outdoors.

"It's not just going to be good for hunters, I think it will people who are hiking and what not,” said McGuirl. “Those Forest Service maps just aren't as readily available as they used to be, and everybody's gone portable and mobile, and it makes sense to move this direction, at least to keep it more relevant."

We're told the Forest Service is also working on a website redesign expected to be out next year that has a map based tool people can use to plan national forest trips.
