KALISPELL, Mont. -

The Northwest Montana Veterans Food Pantry is pushing to build a housing facility for homeless veterans in the Flathead.

With more than 8,500 veterans in Flathead County, Northwest Montana Veterans Food Pantry CEO Allen Erickson says the need for veteran assistance is growing.

That's exactly what he's hoping to do by building a homeless veterans housing complex in evergreen.

"To give a homeless veteran an opportunity to live in his own place, without the fear of being evicted," said Erickson.

Erickson is currently holding a fundraiser to construct a housing facility for homeless veterans and their families. It will hold up to 18 single veterans, 12 couples, five single families and 5 family units.

The facility will also have recreation rooms and a veteran’s case manager to help assist veterans with their personal needs.

Erickson tells us they already around 350 families at the food pantry, and there's a great need for housing for homeless veterans in the Flathead.

"I can't stress the fact enough that there should not be a veteran that is homeless in this country, but there are by the thousands.  If I can get 50 families off of the street and living in a home, you can't ask for anything better," Erickson said.

Erickson hopes to finalize plans for the project once their fundraising to buy the land for the project is completed next month.

The pantry is selling $100 raffle tickets where 100 percent of the proceeds will go towards the shelter project.
