Bozeman city workers battled a water main break near Montana State University Thursday night, and they said it caused several homes and restaurants to go without water.

We're told police noticed water spouting from the ground near the intersection of Willson and Kagy around 5 pm Thursday afternoon.

Traffic was slow going in the area for several hours, and the right turn lane onto Kagy from the southbound lane of Willson closed off to drivers.

City of Bozeman Water Department Lead Worker Pat Simon said water was shutoff to a half a dozen homes and at least a couple restaurants including Sola Cafe while they worked to repair the line.

Simon expected water to be restored to the houses and businesses sometime Thursday night.

He said crews weren't sure how the main broke, but said it's possible the pavement freezing up recently then thawing and expanding out caused the water pipe to burst.
