Whitefish City Councilors are considering a speed study on a heavily trafficked road. The area of concern is Wisconsin Avenue from Labrie Drive to Big Mountain Road. The posted speed limit is 45 miles per hour, but some residents hope the speed could be lowered to 35.
Folks who live on Wisconsin Ave told NBC Montana pedestrian safety and deer hazards are their main concerns. But city staffers say speed limits do not change based on residents' opinions. We're told a speed study can actually increase the speed limit. the Montana Department of Transportation looks at how fast 85% of drivers are going and base the new speed limit off that number.
"I do know people coming off the mountain coming into town on the corner there by Iron Horse they tend to go a little bit fast in that area which is where I would tend to hope the study would go to," said council member Phil Mitchell.
The Montana Department of Transportation reports speed studies can take 9-12 months to complete.
