WHITEFISH, Mont. -

A Whitefish woman has denied two homicide charges filed in the stabbing death of her husband.

39-year-old AnnMari Helt Newton pleaded not guilty Thursday to mitigated deliberate homicide and an alternative charge of negligent homicide.

Helt Newton's husband, 37-year-old Chad Newton, died on Dec. 29, a day after he was removed from life support at the Kalispell hospital. Newton had been hospitalized since being stabbed in the chest on Nov. 25.

Helt Newton was initially charged with assault with a weapon and was free after posting a $25,000 bond.

Deputy Flathead County Attorney Travis Ahner argued that District Judge Ted Lympus should increase Helt Newton's bond to $100,000 due to the increased severity of the charges. Lympus said he would take that under advisement.
