ZooMontana is profitable for the first time in four years.
Executive Director Jeff Ewelt says the zoo expects to report a profit of about $86,000 for the fiscal year ending Monday. A year ago, the zoo reported a $155,000 shortfall.
The zoo hasn't shown a profit since the 2008-09 fiscal year and faced closure in the spring of 2011. It lost its accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums due to its lack of financial stability.
Ewelt says increased attendance, more donations and an increase in special events helped turn things around, while volunteers have provided more than 4,400 hours of work since January.
He says visitors can see the zoo is making progress by creating new exhibits and making other improvements.
