North Carolina coach Roy Williams, who was mentioned for the job opening of the Los Angeles Lakers, did his best to squash those rumors, reiterating his position that "I'm a college coach."
Williams' name came up after Mike D'Antoni resigned as the Lakers coach last week. The Lakers finished the 2013-14 season 27-55, the worst 82-game record in team history.
The 63-year-old Williams has spent his entire career in the collegiate ranks.
"I've always felt like that I'm a college coach and that's where I belong," Williams said on FOX Sports Radio on Wednesday. "(Lakers general manager) Mitch Kupchak is one of my best friends in the whole wide world, there's no question there, but I'm a college guy and if somebody calls and offers me the greatest job in the world, it better be really good because I feel like I've got about the greatest job in the world."
Williams declined to interview for the Lakers job in 2004. Kupchak is a North Carolina alumnus.
