Over the past week one athlete broke her school record in the javelin throw. And she didn't do it just once either, but twice at separate meets.
Anaconda copperhead senior Malia Estes has definitely had a week to remember. At the Dillon Invitational last Thursday she threw a school record of 143 feet and 10 inches, that's the best mark this year in the state by any girl.
And then over the weekend she did it again, this time at the Belgrade Invitational. That one flew a distance of 146 feet and 3 inches. That mark right now is ranked top five in the entire country according to www.athletic.net which keeps tabs on many top track and field marks across the country.
"Yeah I'm really taken back," said Estes reflecting upon her recent throws. "Javelin is what I love to do. I've loved it since I was a little girl. I didn't even realize I was capable of that because I'm 5-foot-9 and 125 pounds, so I'm not very big. But when I hit it, it was just the best feeling that I've ever had and it makes me want to work harder to keep reaching out and keep getting better because it's an awesome feeling."
