MISSOULA, Mont. -

Makena Morley has made national headlines for her success as a Cross Country standout in the fall, but the Bigfork junior had her talents on full display last week at the Class B state track and field meet in Butte.

Morley ran away from the competition in multiple events.  She started the meet with a bang on Friday by winning the 1600 meters in 4 minutes, 53.83 seconds.  Her winning time was nearly 25 seconds better than the next finisher.

“It was awesome. I really did want to get a little faster, but I tried my hardest,” said Morley after Friday’s race. “Yeah it felt good. I like the track, the elevation is a little tough because ours at Bigfork is a lot lower but it felt good.”

Morley continued to dominate in the rest of her events on Saturday. First up was the 800 meters where Morley clocked in at 2 minutes, 12 seconds.  That finish was six seconds ahead of her own teammate Emily Cheroske in second place.

Morley would also win the 3200 meters in 10 minutes, 58.85 seconds to clock in over a minute ahead of everyone else. And then Morley's 1600 meter relay team also took first place to end the day.

Morley's individual efforts would have placed her top-5 just by herself in the overall team standings at the class 'B' state meet.  She led Bigfork to a 2nd place state finish with 58.5 points; Plains won the class B girls title with 83 points.

"I've been really happy with the season,” said Morley.  “I mean I haven't done that many races but I didn't really want to do too many this year.  I'm happy with how it’s going.  I'm doing a lot better than last year so it's been good."

Makena’s younger brother Logan Morley had a good weekend himself at the state meet for the Vikings.  The sophomore distance runner took top honors in the 1600 meters while finishing second place in the 3200 meters and third place in the 800 meters.
