MISSOULA, Mont. -

It was a very successful homecoming weekend for the Grizzly football team on Saturday as Montana picked up their first conference win of the year by cruising to victory 55-27 over Portland State.

The biggest contributor on defense from Montana was senior Anthony Goodwin, known as “Chief” by his friends and teammates.

On Monday Goodwin was named the ROOT SPORTS defensive player of the week for the Big Sky conference as well as the Sports Network co-national “Player of the Week” on defense.

The senior cornerback came up with two huge interceptions for Montana; both of his picks would lead to touchdowns on offense for the Grizzlies.

"You know Chief is a perfect mentality cornerback,” said head coach Mick Delaney of Goodwin.  “They don't get any better than him and there's not many of them in college football you know.  Guys will go in the tank when they do get beat or start or start feeling sorry for themselves.  Chief gets beat and bounces right up the next play and just keeps right on going and that's what you've got to do."

Goodwin’s first interception came on Portland State's second offensive play of the day early in the first quarter.  His second pick was an extremely athletic one-handed grab; that turnover came on PSU’s very first offense play of the second half.

Goodwin finished the game with an outstanding total of seven pass deflections, which is the most by a player in FCS football this season. “Chief” says his excellent day was a byproduct of a great defensive game plan by his coaches

"The biggest thing I think is that Coach Ty (Gregorak) was just putting us in the best positions possible,” said Goodwin after the game.  “He was calling the right plays at the right time and he knew exactly what to do and our game plan was on point.  And then up front our D-line was making them get it out quick, and our backers were eating the run and so they had to pass it and so it came to us and we were well prepared."
