Griz enter football season with chip on shoulder

MISSOULA, Mont. -

The Montana Grizzlies will kick off the 2013 football season at home under the lights inside Washinton-Grizzly Stadium.

Montana's defense says after the struggles of last year they're ready to prove to everyone that Griz football hasn't gone anywhere.

"It's not often in the last 30 years that a Montana football team has probably started the season with a chip on its shoulder," said Griz defensive coordinator Ty Gregorak. "This team does have a little chip."

There's no doubt the Grizzlies have plenty of questions to answer this fall after finishing last season with just five wins.

"Last year is old," said Griz senior linebacker Jordan Tripp. "We have to take the stuff that we did wrong we applied it in spring applied it in the summer and we just have to find ways that we're going to get better in those categories.

But while the defense is looking past last seasons finish and focusing on a fresh start, they're still using it as motivation.

"We have a chip on our shoulder," said Griz senior linebacker Brock Coyle. "We feel we're under appreciated and we're just excited to go out there and prove it on the field that we're the Griz and we're excited to get back and work hard and work for a championship."

"This year's a new slate, new chapter, we've got to write our own legacy," said Tripp. "It's going to be a blast I'm so excited to play with these guys to have the opportunity is just a true blessing it's fantastic I love it."

The Griz will look to get redemption Saturday night against Appalachian State after losing to them last year 35-27.
