MISSOULA, Mont. -

Whitefish high school graduate Kurt Paulson has joined Wayne Tinkle’s staff as the new assistant coach for the Montana men’s basketball team.

“Yeah it's been kind of a whirlwind and of course I'm really excited,” said Paulson of today’s official announcement.

Paulson was a graduate assistant coach for the Grizzlies during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.

Paulson was a five year member of the Carroll College men’s program (2001-2006) where he led the Saints to the 2005 NAIA semifinals and the 2006 quarterfinals.  Paulson finished third in the nation in assists as a junior. As a senior he helped Carroll set a school record for wins with 30.

Paulson joins Jonathan Metzger-Jones and Kerry Rupp as the Grizzlies’ assistant coaches under Tinkle, who will be entering his eighth season at Montana next fall.

“Coach Tinkle and I have known each other for a lot of years and he's become the best coach in the Big Sky there is no doubt about that,” says Paulson of rejoining Tinkle’s staff.  “His goals now are just winning championships every year and getting to the NCAA tournament and trying to win games.  I'm just happy to be a part of that.  It's a dream come true for me I've got a lot of pride in that school and I just can't wait to get started.”

Paulson spent his last two years as the activities director and boys’ basketball coach at Bigfork High School where he won 39 games on the hardwoods and guided the Vikings to the Class B state semifinals this past winter.
