MISSOULA, Mont. -

The Missoula Mavericks baseball season will soon be over with state tournament play right around the corner, and for one Mavs player it could possibly mark the beginning of the next chapter.

It was only a few weeks ago that Missoula Mavs catcher Slade Heggen was trying to figure out which college he would attend to play baseball. Now, after much thought, Heggen made his decision.

"It's been a long process," said Heggen. "It was kind of exciting I was really nervous to do it, called them and I said I want to win a national championship and I want to be a duck."

Heggen will take his talents to Oregon where he will play in the PAC-12 Conference. He says after he took a trip to check everything out he knew it was the right choice, and that it was truly a special moment.

"I saw the campus, took a tour, met the coaches and I just kind of like fell in love with the place," said Heggen. "That moment right there is something I wont forget because it was just really memorable."

And while the weight has been lifted off of his shoulders Heggen says there's still some unfinished business this season and that winning a state title would mean everything.

"This might be my last season with the Mavs because Oregon wants to funnel me into a West Coast League after next year if I don't graduate early and that just makes me want it even more," said Heggen. "Throughout the entire season I kind of had the idea that this might be my last season but now I know and I want nothing more than to be remembered as one of the great ball clubs that came through this program because I think we are."

The Mavs have nine conference games left before state tournament play begins in Billings.
