It was a back and forth start for both teams, after the first quarter the game was tied at 15. Then in the second quarter Bigfork was able to get a little separation and went to the half with a 34-27 lead. The game remained close throughout the second half until late in the game when the Vikings started to pull away. Bigfork recorded the 71-62 victory to not only be named state champs for the first time, but to cap of a perfect season of 26-0.
"I give so much credit to these guys," said Bigfork head coach Josh Downey. "A coach can only make a team go from great to really great or good to great or the other way. I give all the credit to these guys."
"Thirty years down the road we're going to look back on this and say yeah we were that team that went undefeated and won the state championship that year, first team ever," said Bigfork junior Josh Sandry.
Sandry led the way in scoring for the Vikings and finished with a game high 23 points. Sandry had the hot hand going 9-of-15 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. Christian Evans and Trent Ryder also hit double digits in scoring, Evans had 17 and Ryder scored 13 points.
The Vikings will have a chance to repeat as champs next year after losing only three seniors to graduation this spring.
