A northwestern Montana copper and silver mine that has been shut down since December due to rock falls and cave-ins laid off 100 workers this week.
The Western News reports Troy Mine laid off about half the mine's workers Wednesday and Thursday.
Revett Minerals President and CEO John Shanahan says they've been working to get the mine back into production. He says the remaining crews will focus on development of an alternative route over the next few months. He says if safe access can be re-established, mining could possibly resume late this year.
Since the December shutdown, mine crews have been kept busy performing maintenance work. However, Revett reported losing $4 million in the first three months of the year.
